Race day one delivered near-perfect conditions, with 14-18 knots of breeze, flat water, and stunning scenery providing a spectacular start to the five-day Regatta. The combined Maxi (100 ft) and Maxi Grand Prix (72 ft) fleet features an impressive lineup, including Galateia, Leopard 3, V, Deep Blue and Balthasar, with Blackjack 100 and Bella Mente making their Maxi Regatta debuts. Also new to line up in 2026, the Performance class - including Freya, Hummingbird and Ammonite.
Racing got underway between the Islands of Moskito and Necker, with the fleet setting off on a challenging coastal course - and finishing just off Moskito’s iconic Cape Stout. The Maxi and Maxi Grand Prix yachts took on a 40-mile coastal race, while the Performance class took on 34 [miles]. Both classes were close, weaving around the marks and the Islands off Virgin Gorda.
“You’ve got to pinch yourself,” said Terry Hutchinson, Tactician aboard Bella Mente. “When you look at where we are, what we’re doing, and who we’re racing against - this is definitely one of those moments.”
In the Performance fleet, Freya’s Tactician Kimo Worthington reflected on a standout day on the water: “It was amazing. The smooth water - the whole thing is unbelievable. We had good competition and made some great calls. A few moments went our way, and sometimes that bit of luck makes all the difference.”
Adrian Steed, of Belle Mente, “Fantastic first day of racing here in the BVIs - a 30-35 mile coastal race with 14 legs around Islands and marks. Breeze and sunshine - absolutely awesome racing. A great opener.”
For Noel Drennan aboard V, the focus was on the tight competition: “We had a really good race. Racing was incredibly close, and getting to the first mark in front made a big difference for us.”
Off the water, the Regatta has already lived up to its reputation; teams have been welcomed back in true Caribbean style, enjoying relaxed sundowners and the North Sails Kite Show at Saba Rock, followed by last night’s opening party at Moskito.
With an exceptional first race day, the stage is set for an exciting few days ahead. Racing takes place 20 - 24 March and includes the ‘Triple Sunday’ time trial.
